Mauvais Sang, founded by Jialin Gao in 2023 in London, is dedicated to perpetuating classic menswear silhouettes, incorporating retro styles, precise tailoring, and unique artisanal fabrics.

I seamlessly blend concepts from the realms of art, including painting, literature, and music, with the craftsmanship of tailoring. By reviving and innovating the attire and intellectual domains of the previous century, our brand, through fashion and tailoring, crystallizes

and targets a customer community composed of artists, filmmakers, intellectuals, scholars, reminiscent of the Bloomsbury Group of the first half of the 20th century. This exploration aims to examine a retro lifestyle in the new era. Daily attire, scrutiny, self-reflection, and detachment

of self-consciousness from others’ views on social media are inherent to the fluidity of the fashion industry. Mauvais Sang seeks a “counteraction and extension” of this mechanism by encouraging customers to revere the cultural phenomena behind clothing rather than merely the clothing products themselves.

The FW24 collection, themed “Fear Eats the Soul,” draws inspiration from the 1974 film of the same name by German New Wave director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. The series focuses on the analysis of styles and cultural origins of Jewish artists, filmmakers, psychoanalysts, and musicians emerging from Berlin and Poland during the historical periods of World War I and II. By integrating the aesthetics from specific exceptional states within the vast Jewish communities of the Eastern and Western Europe, the collection expresses profound admiration for the immense creativity born from intellectual circles under extreme social and political conditions. Comprising six looks of menswear, each symbolizing a distinct societal role — Artist, psychoanalyst, violinist, sailor, priest, and soldier — the collection embodies a fusion of identities and narratives.
